Geodiversity and Geomorphosite Assessment Applied to a Natural Protected Area: the Ebro and Rudron Gorges Natural Park (Spain)

Abstract: Geodiversity and geomorphosites in a natural protected area in Spain are evaluated. The estimation of geodiversity has been calculated by habitat and by geomorphological unit based on the calculation method developed by Serrano and Ruiz-Flaño, and geomorphosites have been assessed for the same area. Finally, results from the calculation of geodiversity and geomorphosites are compared. The aim is to introduce a series of tools that the manager can apply to integrate abiotic aspects in the evaluation and protect… Show more

“…Geodiversity refers to the heterogeneity of abiotic nature, i.e. variability of earth surface materials, forms and processes at global, regional and local scales (Gray, 2004;Serrano and RuizFlaño, 2007;Benito-Calvo et al, 2009;Panizza, 2009;Hjort and Luoto, 2010;Pellitero et al, 2011). According to most geoscientists, key elements of geodiversity include features from the geosphere and hydrosphere (e.g.…”

“…According to most geoscientists, key elements of geodiversity include features from the geosphere and hydrosphere (e.g. Gray, 2004;Serrano and Ruiz-Flaño, 2007;Pellitero et al, 2011). There is now increased awareness of our need to understand the patterns of geodiversity, especially in landscapes facing natural-and human-induced changes (Prosser et al, 2010).…”

“…In 2009 this number surpassed 60,000 [9]. It should be mentioned at this point that some of the sites of geomorphological interest in Valderejo have potential for geotourism and must be considered as managed territorial resources in order to guarantee a balance between conservation and sustainability.…”

“…Geodiversity is considered a fundamental part of natural diversity, the support of natural habitats and landscapes and therefore a territorial management tool for nature conservation specifically oriented to territorial decision-making, planning, and education. With these aims we begin with the concept of geodiversity as "the variability of abiotic nature, including lithological, tectonic, geomorphological, soil, hydrological, topographical elements and physical processes on the land surface and in the seas and oceans, together with systems generated by natural, endogenous and exogenous and human processes, which cover the diversity of particles, elements and sites" [3,9,10]. − The inventory and definition of geomorphosites (Figure 8).…”

“…En Pellitero et al (2011) se realizó un estudio comparado de los valores de geodiversidad y patrimonio geomorfológico para el Parque Natural de los Cañones del Ebro y Rudrón. Con este estudio el gestor puede definir cuáles son los entornos en los que se puede canalizar una mayor densidad de uso y cuáles deberían permanecer apartados, lo que permite canalizar los flujos turísticos a consultar capítulo 9 de este mismo libro.…”
