Geochronology, Petrogenesis and Oxidation State of the Northparkes Igneous Suite, New South Wales, Australia: Implications for Magma Fertility

Abstract: New geochronological and geochemical data for the barren and ore-associated suites from the Northparkes porphyry Cu-Au deposits, Australia, have implications for magma fertility. The Goonumbla and Wombin Volcanics and intrusions are barren in the Northparkes area. A sample from Wombin suite yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 433.8 ± 3.1 Ma, whereas the ore-associated porphyries yielded ages between 441.8 ± 3.7 and 436.3 ± 4.5 Ma. The bulk of the mineralization at Northparkes is associated with a K-feldspar-phyric qu… Show more

“…The rare earth element (REE) patterns of the alkaline volcanic rocks and the ore-associated suites in the Sanjiang belt generally show spoon-shaped characteristics (steep downward slope from light REE to heavy REE, followed by flattening or even slight increase in slope towards heavy REE; Hao et al, 2019;Figure 4a). Because the partition coefficients of heavy REE are lower than middle REE between amphibole and silicate melt, amphibole fractionation can form such spoon-shaped REE patterns in the evolved melts (Hao et al, 2017(Hao et al, , 2021. To investigate the genetic linkage between the metasomatised mantle-derived melts and ore-associated suites, and the role of amphibole during magma differentiation, we modelled the fractionation of REE patterns of the ore-associated suites from the alkaline volcanic rocks (Appendix S1).…”
