Geochemistry of the Upper Paraná River floodplain: study of the Garças Pond and Patos Pond

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal evolution of the supply of chemical elements to the Upper Paraná River floodplain and identify trends in the geochemistry of its drainage basin. The primary factor that regulates the supply of chemical elements of the Upper Paraná River floodplain is the flood pulse, which can be magnified by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Garças Pond is affected by agriculture, urbanization, discharge of industrial effluents and hydroelectric power production activities… Show more

“…The region is situated within a protected reserve with no agricultural areas in the surroundings. Physico-chemical analyses of water did not detect heavy metals or other pollutants in the studied ecosystems [19]. We took four annual samples, once each during summer, spring, autumn and winter (except for years 2001, 2003, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, which were sampled twice annually, in summer and winter owing to funding constraints), of insects, non-native fish and environmental variables.…”

“…Calibration curves were prepared using GLY (97% purity, Sigma Aldrich) and AMPA (99% purity, Sigma Aldrich) standards. An uncontaminated matrix sample from 1876, confirmed by Remor et al 100 , was also analysed in triplicate after fortification procedures with standard solutions. Other details of the analytical procedure are shown in Supplementary Table S5 .…”
