“…These assemblages dominate soil profiles formed from weathered volcanic rocks under hot climatic conditions with alternating moist and dry seasons (Tardy, 1969;Paquet, 1970;Singer, 1966Singer, , 1970Singer, , 1978Duchaufour, 1977;Xu Ji Quan, 1983). Such Tertiary formations having the same mineralogical assemblages have been observed on the Faeroe-Iceland Ridge (DSDP site 336, leg 38) (Nilsen & Kerr, 1978;Parra et al, 1986), on the Scottish islands of Mull and Skye (Godart et al, 1961 ;Bain & Russell, 1980), in the Massif Central of France (Grangeon, 1959;Moinereau, 1966;Camus & Kieffer, 1980;Chesworth et al, 1983)and in Israel (Singer, 1970). Spheroidal alteration at the base of each profile, together with the heterogeneity of the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the clays, is further support for the existence of paleosols on the Faeroe Islands.…”
