“…Black shales in Indian Craton are common in the Srisailam Formation in the Cuddapah Basin, the Bijaigarh shale in Kaimur Formation, the Rampur shale in Rohtas Formation, and the Arangi shale in Kajrahat Formation in Son Valley (Banerjee et al, 2006;Basu et al, 2017). The deposition age of the Srisailam Formation has been constrained to be 1,400-1,327 Ma (Basu et al, 2017). A Re-Os isochron age of 1,210 ± 52 with high MSWD value of 69 was reported for black shales from the Kaimur Group (Tripathy & Singh, 2015).…”

“…In the past few decades, the continental crust and near‐surface environment have received significant attention (Bindeman, Bekker, & Zakharov, 2016; Greber & Dauphas, 2019; Lyons et al, 2014; Taylor & McLennan, 1985). The redox state of the oceans and atmosphere through time, source composition of weathered rocks/sediments, tectonic setting, maturity, provenance, weathering history, and palaeoenvironment of the basins have been inferred using fine‐grained terrigenous sediments (Basu et al, 2017; Bhatia & Crook, 1986; Liu et al, 2019; McLennan et al, 1993; Roser & Korsch, 1986; Banerji et al, 2021b). In the present study, the Shimla and Chail meta‐sediments have been investigated to decipher the source area weathering, provenance, and tectonic setting.…”

“…Mixing and homogenization of compositionally diverse source rocks due to the combined processes of erosion, transportation, deposition, and diagenesis render Post‐Archean sedimentary rocks with a certain degree of geochemical uniformity (McLennan & Taylor, 1991; Taylor, Rudnick, McLennan, & Eriksson, 1986). However, previous studies (Absar, Raza, Roy, Naqvi, & Roy, 2009; Banerji, Bhushan, Joshi, Shaji, & Jull, 2021a; Basu, Dandele, Kumar, Achar, & Umamaheswar, 2017; Bhat & Ghosh, 2001; El‐Bialy, 2013; McLennan, Hemming, Taylor, & Eriksson, 1995; Shukla, George, & Ray, 2020) have suggested that the geochemical characters of sediments and sedimentary rocks can yield reliable insights into the provenance, prevalent weathering conditions, secondary processes (K‐metasomatism), and tectonic setting of the depositional basin.…”

“…19−22 Although the age of Vindhyan Basin is debatable, sedimentation started at ≥1600 Ma (Lower Vindhyan) and ended around 550 Ma (Upper Vindhyan). 21,22 The Cuddapah Basin shales (n = 39) are from the Vempalle, Cumbum, and Srisailam shale units with depositional ages of 1900−1400 Ma [24][25][26]41 (Figure 2). The Kaladgi-Badami Basin in the Dharwar Craton comprises unmetamorphosed arenite, shale, and carbonate sequences; compiled data represent samples (n = 49) belonging to nine shale units of the Kaladgi Supergroup.…”
