The Mãe d`Água reservoir is the mouth of four streams, corresponding to an area of 352 ha and is located in the Vale Campus of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The study area is currently predominantly characterized by a residential occupation, with environmental liabilities coming from diffuse sources. The application of the methodology for computational modeling in the Mãe d'Água reservoir, inferring about the useful volume of the project in 1962, useful volume in 2014, and the silting volume was developed with the aid of the following software: AutoCAD 2018, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018, and Google Earth which specialize in the field of geoprocessing and guidelines for the calculations that use as base the data regarding the survey and processing of field data. Two types of remote sensing products were used to evaluate the evolution of urbanization in the study area: aerial photographs and satellite images which were integrated in a geographic database. Through the results, it was possible to verify that the silting volume occupies approximately 44% of the useful volume of the reservoir, the urbanization rate has growth trends, and, 88.42% of the river basin was urbanized in 2014. Thus, it represents a spatial distribution and establishes correlations between sedimentation studies over the last five decades.

To evaluate the total mercury accumulation (THg) in the Descoberto river basin environmental protection area (DREPA), nine sediment and water samples were collected from the Descoberto reservoir (lentic environment), and 23 in its tributaries (lotic environment), which are located in a densely urbanized area within the Descoberto river watershed, Brazil. The following physicochemical parameters of water were determined: dissolved oxygen (DO); hydrogen potential (pH); total dissolved solids (TDS); nitrate (NO3−); chloride (Cl−); temperature (T); sulfate (SO42−), and in sediment, the concentration of total mercury (THg) and volatile material (VM) was determined. THg concentrations in sediments showed a significant difference (p = 0.002) between tributaries (0.03 µg g−1 ± 0.02) and reservoir (0.08 µg g−1 ± 0.04), indicating accumulation in the lentic environment. Most of the results evaluated for ecotoxicological risks presented values below the concentration, at which adverse effects would rarely be observed, ERL (effects range low). However, in relation to the enrichment factor (EF), applied to identify the anthropogenic contribution, the results indicate that most of the samples are moderately polluted through atmospheric deposition due to vehicular traffic and agriculture. These results show that the likelihood of methylation in the lentic environment is higher than in the lotic environment.

Guidelines are adopted to assist the processes of environmental monitoring and safeguard aquatic ecosystems. In Brazil, the Conama Resolution 357/05 (CR) is the main guideline ruling, such a normative mechanism is an instrument of the National Water Resources Policy. However, the CR does not consider specific ecological aspects and just imposes generalist standards for all country. We propose a list of the main elements that should be considered in a possible CR review according to the literature with the intent to assist the decision-makers during the revision process. Aspects involving ecoregions; biotic communities; organic substances; ammonia behavior; permissiveness related to some limnological variables and water class; pesticides; electrical conductivity; temperature; true color; general values from other countries and emergent micropollutants are proposed. CR is an extremely useful instrument in the Brazilian scenario, however, its revision and incorporation of the mentioned aspects will contribute to the elaboration of intervention measures and monitoring of national aquatic ecosystems.
