The Denizli Basin is a fault-bounded Neogene-Quaternary depression located in the Western Anatolian Extensional Province, Western Turkey. The basin is a unique geological site with abundant active and fossil (Quaternary) travertine and tufa deposits. Fluid inclusion microthermometry and isotopic analysis were applied to study the genesis of the Ballk fossil travertine deposits, located in the south-eastern part of the basin. Microthermometry on fluid inclusions indicates that the main travertine precipitating and cementing fluids are characterized by low salinity (<07wt% NaCl equivalent) and variable temperatures that cluster at <50 degrees C and ca 100 degrees C. Fluids of meteoric origin have been heated by migration to the deeper subsurface, possibly in a local high geothermal gradient setting. A later uncommon cementation phase is related to a fluid with a significantly higher salinity (255 to 260wt% bulk). The fluid obtained its salinity by interaction with Late Triassic evaporite layers. Strontium isotopes indicate that the parent carbonate source rock of the different travertine precipitates is very likely to be the Triassic limestone of the Lycian Nappes. Carbon isotopes suggest that the parent CO2 gas originated from thermal decarbonation of the Lycian limestones with minor contributions of magmatic degassing and organic soil CO2. Oxygen isotopes confirm the meteoric origin of the fluids and indicate disequilibrium precipitation because of evaporation and degassing. Results were integrated within the available geological data of the Denizli Basin in a generalized travertine precipitation model, which enhanced the understanding of fossil travertine systems. The study highlights the novel application of fluid inclusion research in unravelling the genesis of continental carbonates and provides several recommendations for hydrocarbon exploration in travertine-bearing sedimentary basins. The findings suggest that travertine bodies and their parent carbonate source rocks have the potential to constitute interesting subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs

Abstract.We revised the concept of convective, intrusive geothermal plays, considering that the tectonic setting is not, in our opinion, a discriminant parameter suitable for a classification. We analysed and compared four case studies: (i) Larderello (Italy), (ii) Mt Amiata (Italy), (iii) The Geysers (USA) and (iv) Kizildere (Turkey). The tectonic settings of these geothermal systems are different and a matter of debate, so it is hard to use this parameter, and the results of classification are ambiguous. We suggest a classification based on the age and nature of the heat source and the related hydrothermal circulation. Finally we propose to distinguish the convective geothermal plays as volcanic, young intrusive and amagmatic.

Geological storage of CO2 is currently regarded as one of the major strategies to mitigate the increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere due to anthropogenic emissions from large‐scale point sources. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are a novel concept in which CO2 is used as a working fluid to increase energy recovery, combined with its subsurface storage. In this study, the geothermal systems of western Anatolia are considered as potential sites for EGS, and the published hydrogeochemical data relevant to these systems are compiled and evaluated in terms of potential water/CO2/rock interaction processes. The evaluation is performed with geochemical approaches including speciation‐solubility calculations, and inverse and dedolomitization modelling. The results lead to the recognition of two different groups with respect to the effective processes: carbonate precipitation, and carbonate precipitation plus dissolution. In high‐enthalpy fields, carbonate precipitation seems to be the major mechanism, while others show the effects of both precipitation and dissolution; dedolomitization is also identified as a potential mechanism for one of the fields. These processes are examined with regard to CO2‐fixation; carbonate precipitation may lead to mineral trapping while carbonate dissolution provides additional cations to the system to react with CO2. Being relevant to CO2 storage in geothermal fields, the conclusions from this study point to the importance of temperature control for CO2 stabilization, as high temperatures seem to promote mineral trapping. The success of a CO2‐EGS project depends on complete geochemical characterization of reservoir processes with further kinetic modelling accompanying the thermodynamic modelling exemplified by this study. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
