“…Although some studies have suggested the importance of Ca-P reactions to regulating nutrient availability (Boyer and Wheeler 1989;Futyma and Miller 2001;Komor 1994) and plant species distributions in fens (Bedford and Godwin 2003), our results are consistent with other studies suggesting alternative mechanisms play a more critical role in regulating P dynamics under conditions of circumneutral pH and low P-availability. Specific processes include plant and microbial uptake, sorption to iron oxides, clays and organic matter, and precipitation with more reactive minerals (House 2003). Plant production of tannic acids and polyphenols also inhibits calcite growth (Hoch et al 2000) while biological production of CO 2 accelerates CaCO 3 dissolution (DePinto et al 1989).…”

“…Samples were analysed within 24 hours, to minimise errors associated with sample instability (House and Warwick, 1998;Jarvie et al, 2002a). SRP is considered equivalent to bioavailable phosphorus (House, 2003). Dissolved reactive silicon concentration was determined by reaction with acid ammonium molybdate, to form yellow molybdosilicic acids.…”

“…To characterise any differences in community composition between treatments, multivariate analyses were performed using CANOCO version 4.5 (Ter Braak, 1988-2003. Exploratory detrended correspondence analyses (DCA) indicated that gradient lengths were short (less than 2) and this, together with an inspection of species responses, suggested that linear methods would be most appropriate (Leps and Smilauer, 2002).…”

“…Recent studies of large-scale reductions in river P concentrations have shown no significant improvement in ecological quality (Jarvie et al, 2002a(Jarvie et al, , 2004. However, more information is required to assess the long-term ecological impacts and lags associated with reducing concentrations in rivers, and the potential importance of within-river processing linked to interactions between river sediments and dissolved P (House, 2003;House and Denison, 2002) and between species and aquatic plants (Jarvie et al, 2002b).…”
