Geochemical characterization of the mining district of Linares (Jaen, Spain) by means of XRF and ICP-AES

Abstract: Keywords: XRF ICP-AES Trace elements Mining SulphidesLinares (Jaen, Spain) has been subjected to an intense mining and metallurgic activity during 2500 years. Basically, lead and silver have been extracted from galena; as well as copper and zinc. Different studies have been conducted to evaluate trace element concentrations to obtain relationships with anthropogenic and geologic factors. The analytical results of these studies have been obtained with ICP-AES. This analytical technique is relatively expensive a… Show more

“…The disparity between XRF and ICP-OES values was also observed by Arenas and coworkers [ 20 ], who examined geochemical characterization of the mining district. The content of Cu was 5.8 times higher for XRF than for ICP-OES, Zn—1.3 times higher and for Mn the values were comparable.…”

“…The cross-correlations of X-ray fluorescence results with ICP-OES were described in the literature, for example for sediment samples [ 19 ], soil samples [ 20 , 21 , 22 ], municipal landfill leachate [ 23 ], dental ceramics [ 10 ], air filter samples [ 24 ]. Figure 1 illustrates differences between described analytical methods.…”

“…Radu assessed the reliability of FPXRF by AAS [22], whereas some other scholars also used ICP-MS [21,[31][32][33][34] and ICP-AES [35][36][37] to conduct comparison with FPXRF.…”

“…In a previous study, several laboratory techniques, excluding ICP-OES [32,36,37], were used to perform cross-validation to assess the reliability of HH-XRF. Examples of such techniques are atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) [34], inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) [18], and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) [38,39].…”
