The presence of high indoor radon concentration in residential buildings is a major concern of the public worldwide. Measurements of the indoor radon concentration in some selected residential buildings made of different building materials within Okrika local Government Area, in Rives State, Nigeria, was carried out using a Corentium Digital Radon Detector. The maximum mean value of the indoor radon concentration recorded was 19.36 ± 2.26 Bq/m 3 for mud houses, and minimum mean value of 09.35±0.78 Bq/m 3 for houses made of cemented solid blocks and floored with ceramic tiles, with an overall mean of 11.70 ± 3.28 Bq/m 3 . This value is below the range of limit of 200 and 600 Bq/m 3 recommended by ICRP for residential buildings. Values of the computed annual absorbed dose rate varied from 0.24 ± 0.01 to 0.49 ± 0.03mSvy 1 , with an overall mean of 0.30 ± 0.08 mSvy -1 . This value is lower than the recommended ICRP intervention limit of between (3-10) mSvy -1 . The computed annual equivalent dose rate ranged from 0.58 ± 0.02 to 1.17 ± 0.08 mSvy -1 , with an overall mean of 0.71 ± 0.20 mSvy -1 . This value is lower than the maximum permissible limit of 1 mSvy -1 recommended by ICRP. The computed excess life cancer risk ranged from 2.

The current work deals with indoor radon (222Rn) concentrations measurements in the Calabar Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria using a Corentium Arthings digital radon detector meter for seven days representing a short–term average measurement of indoor radon gas concentration level. The geographical coordinates were recorded using a hand-held geographical positioning system for the sample point. Measurement were taken for seven days and the following data where obtained 83±2.19 Bq/m3,80±3.69 Bq/m3,86±5.57 Bq/m3,84±1.59 Bq/m3,82±3.59 Bq/m3,81±4.89 Bq/m3 and 85 ±5.59 Bq/m3.The average radon(222Rn) concentration level was found to be 83 ± 3.87 Bq/m3 with a geometric mean of 82 ± 3.54 Bq/m3. It was observed that the radon concentration was below the reference level of 100 Bq/m3 recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although the current exposure of members of the public to natural radiation is not critical, the situation could change abruptly when other activities commenced. The excess life time cancer risk calculated for 70 years, 60 years, 50 years, 40 years and 30 years were 1.72 × 10−3,1.65× 10−3,1.39× 10−3,1.44× 10−3 and 0.69× 10−3 respectively. The calculated values of the excess life time cancer risk are all higher than the set limit of 0.029 × 10−3 by International Commission on Radiological Protection. However, there are no observed cases of lung cancer epidemic in this Centre. Therefore, it is advised to use fans and effective ventilation techniques to reduce radon levels. Identifying the regions of the country where people are most at risk from radon exposure should be the main goal of any national radon policy.

Are Coal-Hosted Gallium-Rich Ores Elastically Detectable: A Rock-Physics Modeling Perspective

Coal-hosted gallium-rich ores are mainly explored with geochemical analyses, and their elasticities lack research. This paper incorporated core testing, rock-physics modeling, and Monte Carlo simulations to characterize the elastic parameters of gallium-rich cores and discuss whether coal-hosted gallium-rich ores are elastically detectable. The measured cores from No. 6 coal in the Heidaigou mine showed that the gallium contents strongly correlate to the boehmite contents with a 0.96 correlation coefficient. The rock-physics modeling results showed that mineral compositions and contents are critical factors influencing elastic parameters, and elastic parameters in No. 6 coal showed profound heterogeneities as mineral compositions and contents. The preferred parameters for classifying and grouping different mineral-rich cores are the bulk modulus and moduli ratio. Cross-plotting bulk modulus vs. moduli ratio can qualitatively group measured cores and Monte-Carlo simulated realizations into different mineral-rich and saturation states properly. Concerning the factors of boehmite content, porosity, and saturation state, an interpretation template for boehmite-rich coal was proposed and used. As the template interpreted readings close to the measured contents, the built templates can quantitatively interpret boehmite and gallium contents in coal-hosted ores with high precision. In summary, the coal-hosted gallium-rich ores are elastically detectable.
