In Pagondas and Kimi areas, central Evia Island, Greece, variably serpentinized ultramafic rocks of an ophiolitic origin are crosscut by rodingite dikes. Based on their protoliths, these rodingites are distinguished into the following: (i) rodingites of island arc tholeiitic dolerites, (ii) rodingites of Mg-rich tholeiitic gabbros, (iii) rodingites of alkaline basalts, and (iv) rodingites of calc-alkaline basalts. Rodingitization evolved in three successive phases (namely, stages 1, 2, and 3) of increasing metasomatic degree that occurred during the exhumation of the mantle wedge serpentinites. Thermodynamic modeling suggests that stage 1 was developed at ~5 kbar and 450-550°C, whereas at stage 2 and stage 3, gradually decreasing P-T conditions prevailed. Stage 1 affected the protoliths of all rodingite types and was characterized by the crystallization of grossular, diopside, chlorite, and prehnite leading to Ca and LOI enrichments. The observed Si and REE depletions are assigned to the dissolution of primary clinopyroxene and amphibole. Stage 2 mainly affected the rodingites that were derived from alkaline and calc-alkaline basalts, promoting the growth of andradite, vesuvianite, and chlorite at the expense of stage 1 rodingitization mineral phases. At this stage, the marginal zones of rodingite dikes from alkaline and calc-alkaline basalts experienced remarkable Mg and REE enrichments. Stage 3 corresponds to derodingitization and restricted carbonation processes of the previously formed rodingites, which are associated with Fe enrichments. During this stage, significant trace elements including REEs were transferred from the marginal zones to the inner cores of rodingite dikes that were derived from metasomatism of calc-alkaline basalts. Calcite δ18Ο-δ13C isotopic data suggest that carbonation processes were developed at shallow depths below the Tethyan ocean floor, through mixing of seawater and serpentinization-derived fluids. Such multiple stages of rodingitization processes that affected four different lithotypes, as well as the unusual case of alkaline basalts’ rodingitization, would render the Evia rodingites as an important and very rare example of metasomatism.

This study uses mineralogical, petrological, geochemical, and Sr and Nd isotope data along with K-Ar ages to infer the petrogenesis and geodynamic evolution of Middle Triassic high-K calc-alkaline lavas and their associated pyroclastics of Mt. Kuna Gora in NW Croatia. Their analogue mineralogy and bulk-rock geochemistry testify to the coeval origin of both rock types. Sanidine and plagioclase accompanied by inor augite and Ti-bearing magnetite are the major phases found in a matrix of devitrified volcanic glass and plagioclase microlites. Hydrothermal anddiagenetic processes in the pyroclastics originated the formation of chlorite and white mica, and mixed-layer clay minerals, respectively. Petrography reveals the following crystallization order: spinel→clinopyroxene→plagioclase→alkali-feldspar±Fe-Ti oxides. Geochemical and isotopic data suggests that the studied rocks had a complex origin that included the contamination of subduction-generated magmas by lithospheric mantle melts. This presumes an interplay between fertile arc mantle, subducted continental crust, and depleted or ocean island basalts-like mantle. A low degree of crustal contamination stands as a last step in the formation of such “hybrid” magmas. The subducted Paleotethyan oceanic lithosphere went through processes of partial melting at depths of ~45-49km and pressures of ≤1.6GPa and fractionation that produced melts which gave rise to the studied rocks. In the model we are proposing herein such formed partial melts are related to the demise of the northward subduction of the Paleotethys oceanic lithosphere during the Early to Middle Triassic epoch, which is consistent with an active, ensialic mature volcanic arc developing along Laurussian southern active margins.

Soil formation in Mediterranean periglacial karst landscapes remains poorly understood as the interplay between local and allochthonous sources of parent materials, and mineral alteration and pedogenesis, as dominant post‐depositional processes, depends on a variety of climatic and environmental factors. Herein, we investigate the balance between erosion and aeolian dust accretion in the formation of an alpine soil profile in the periglacial zone of Mount Olympus in Greece. We applied a wide range of analytical methods to 23 samples, from a soil profile developed in a glaciokarstic plateau, from colluvial sediment horizons interbedded in postglacial scree slopes of different maturity and formation age and from modern Sahara dust samples deposited on the snowpack. Colluvial sediment horizons exhibit high concentrations of carbonate gravel and calcite‐rich sand and represent the local erosion products. The soil B horizon developed on the glaciokarstic plateau, contains high amounts of fine earth and is rich in quartz, mica, plagioclase, clays and Fe–Ti oxides. Based on physical and textural characteristics, the soil profile is partitioned in a surficial weathered Bw and an illuvial Bt horizon that overlies the local regolith composed of fragmented glacial till and slope wash deposits. Radiogenic isotope systematics, textural and mineralogical analysis show that the contribution of aeolian (Sahara and locally sourced) dust to the development of the soil B horizon ranges between 50% and 65%. Cryoturbation results in fine earth translocation from Bw to the Bt horizon, whereas weak pedogenetic modifications of detrital (aeolian and bedrock‐derived) minerals result in magnetic mineral weathering and secondary clay formation. Our findings reveal that aeolian dust accretion from Saharan and lcal sources is the dominant process in providing alpine soil parent material and that cryoturbation, weak pedogenesis and clay mineral alteration occur within the Mediterranean periglacial zone of Mount Olympus.
