“…1980;Tatsumietal. 1986;McCulloch & Gamble 1991;Brenan et al 1995;Keppler 1996), and variability in the composition of the crustal contaminant (De Paolo 1981) mean that elucidation of a unique petrogenetic pathway for any andesitic volcano will be difficult. Several broad interpretations can be made on the basis of the Turoa geochemical dataset.…”

“…In such systems, the concentration of Ba 2+ in hydrothermal fluid increases whereas that of SO 4 2− tends to decrease via high -temperature water -rock interactions (e.g., McDuff and Edmond, 1982;You et al, 1996). Magmas in subduction zones and back -arc basins have elevated Ba contents as compared to mid -ocean ridge basalts (MORB), because Ba is a fluid -mobile incompatible element and is therefore added to the magma source region via the dehydration of the subducted slab during plate subduction (e.g., McCulloch and Gamble, 1991;Tatsumi and Eggins, 1995;You et al, 1996). The barite contents in hydrothermal mineralization are generally high in volcanic arc and back -arc basin settings relative to those in MORs.…”

“…6). The mafic rocks also have relatively high Nb/La ratios (1.1-1.6), distinguishing them from continental arc basalts (McCulloch and Gamble, 1991). It is noted that the MORB normalized trace element patterns for these samples (Fig.…”
