Incorporating sustainable materials into geotechnical applications increases day by day due to the consideration of impacts on healthy geo-environment and future generations. The environmental issues associated with conventional synthetic materials such as cement, plastic-composites, steel and ashes necessitate alternative approaches in geotechnical engineering. Recently, natural fiber materials in place of synthetic material have gained momentum as an emulating soil-reinforcement technique in sustainable geotechnics. However, the natural fibers are innately different from such synthetic material whereas behavior of fiber-reinforced soil is influenced not only by physical-mechanical properties but also by biochemical properties. In the present review, the applicability of natural plant fibers as oriented distributed fiber-reinforced soil (ODFS) and randomly distributed fiber-reinforced soil (RDFS) are extensively discussed and emphasized the inspiration of RDFS based on the emerging trend. Review also attempts to explore the importance of biochemical composition of natural-fibers on the performance in subsoil reinforced conditions. The treatment methods which enhances the behavior and lifetime of fibers, are also presented. While outlining the current potential of fiber reinforcement technology, some key research gaps have been highlighted at their importance. Finally, the review briefly documents the future direction of the fiber reinforcement technology by associating bio-mediated technological line.

Introducción: este artículo es producto de la investigación “Análisis de la resistencia y durabilidad de un suelo de cemento adicionando material no biodegradable polietileno malla Raschel (polisombra) reciclada en diferentes porcentajes en relación con el peso del suelo”, desarrollada en la Universidad de la Salle durante el 2016. Problema: identificación de las variaciones en las propiedades mecánicas de materiales de subrasante por la adición de materiales poliméricos. Objetivo: recopilar las principales investigaciones sobre las modificaciones de las propiedades de subrasante por medio de adición de fibras naturales y sintéticas, con el fin de tener una base teórica que justifique la aplicación de estas adiciones a nivel constructivo. Metodología: recopilación de bibliografía relevante sobre modificación de subrasante con polímeros y la evaluación del cambio en sus propiedades mecánicas, síntesis y discusión de resultados. Resultado: el 65 % de las investigaciones encontradas corresponde a estudios sobre las modificaciones de la resistencia a la compresión; el 30 % de ellas están dirigidas a estudios enfocados a estudiar la respuesta de los esfuerzos de tracción cuando son fibras poliméricas; y el otro 5 % evalúa propiedades como la fatiga o resistencia a la tensión axial. Conclusiones: se apunta un aumento considerable en la resistencia de compresión, que varía según el tipo o material a mezclar con el suelo y cemento. Originalidad: este artículo presenta la sustitución de materias primas de la subrasante con fibras naturales o sintéticas recicladas. Limitaciones: hasta ahora son pocas las investigaciones que se han encaminado a desarrollar modificaciones de los materiales en la subrasante con fibras naturales; por consiguiente, la información para analizar se ve limitada.

This paper describes the potential use of geocell reinforcement in mitigating the traffic induced vibration. The vibration caused by the vehicular movement was simulated over the unreinforced and geocell reinforced sections using a mechanical oscillator. The displacement amplitude and peak particle velocity were measured to understand the vibration mitigation efficacy of geocell. The effect of depth of placement of geocell on the mitigation of vibration parameters was studied. The inclusion of geocell was found effective in reducing the induced vibration based on the experimental results. The vibration mitigation efficacy of geocell was improved significantly at the shallow depth of placement of geocell mattress. The improvement in elasticity of the subgrade was observed maximum when the geocell was placed at a depth of 0.1B from the ground surface. Further, analytical and numerical approaches were used to predict the displacement amplitude vs. frequency response of reinforced soil sections. FLAC3D was used for performing the numerical investigation. The geocell was modeled according to its honeycomb shape to acquire the accurate response of geocell reinforced section. Whereas, mass spring dashpot analogy was followed for the analytical evaluation. In overall, the amplitude response predicted from the numerical and analytical studies were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.
