Geoarchaeological insights gained from surficial geologic mapping, middle Moche Valley, Peru

Abstract: We present the results of detailed surficial geologic mapping for a 10 km 2 area of alluvial (quebrada) deposits located in the middle Moche Valley of Peru, where archaeological features and deposits provide cross-cutting relationships and numerical age control for late Holocene erosion and deposition associated with El Niñ o. Despite surfaces containing clasts that are heavily pitted and cracked due to salt weathering, archaeological and 14 C dates indicate that most quebrada landforms in the study area are l… Show more

“…Because our surface water δ 18 O values correspond to mid-elevation (~2000 m) precipitation derived primarily from Pacific moisture sources (Aravena et al, 1999), we believe that the advection of Pacific moisture sources during El Niños is an important moisture source that has a fundamentally important role in recharging aquifers and thus may provide a sustained source of water well after the event. Thus El Niños have a catastrophic dimension associated with floodplain stripping (Manners et al, 2007), erosion of important irrigation canals (Huckleberry, 1999;Huckleberry and Billman, 2003), and wiping out villages (Keefer et al, 2003), but they also can provide cultural opportunities and serve a vital role in replenishing and maintaining groundwater resources across the Atacama Desert. …”

“…In addition to identifying particular catastrophic events, whether ENSO-related or tectonic, recent work has highlighted dynamism as endemic to many Andean environments Huckleberry and Billman 2003;Wells and Noller 1999). Erickson (1999) and Van Buren (2001) link this shift in perspective to growing archaeological awareness of the emergence of the ''New Ecology'' (Scoones 1999;Zimmerer 1994) and its de-emphasis of ecological equilibria.…”

“…A growing array of projects has recently attempted to examine changing central Andean polities in their dynamic environmental contexts (e.g., Huckleberry and Billman 2003;Manners et al 2007;Nordt et al 2004;Reycraft 2000;Rigsby et al 2003;Wells and Noller 1999;Zaro and Umire Á lvarez 2005). These studies build intertwined chronologies of sociopolitical and environmental change, using highresolution chronologies and detailed catalogs of landscape and architectural/ settlement change to approach the processes linking cultural and environmental trajectories.…”

“…Recent research into Andean farming systems has focused on coastal agriculture (e.g. Wilson et al, 2002;Huckleberry and Billman, 2003;Nordt et al, 2004) and the Andean highlands are beginning to see renewed interest (e.g. Branch et al, 2007).…”
