GeoAI in the US Geological Survey for topographic mapping

Abstract: The acquisition of nationwide data sets of high-resolution elevation, hydrography and associated data including transportation, trails, geographic names, structures, boundaries, land cover, and orthographic images is a current effort of the National Geospatial Program (NGP) of the USGS. The goal of this acquisition is to better record the USA's natural and built structures in support of science and decision applications for the US Geological Survey (USGS) and Department of Interior, as well as other federal an… Show more

“…Mapping hydrography for the state of Alaska is a daunting task, given its vast area and terrain that is difficult to navigate. Big challenges with large high-quality datasets are well suited to take advantage of recent advancements in neural networks (Usery et al, 2021). This research demonstrates the tremendous potential to improve and speed up mapping of surface water features in Alaska, and elsewhere in the world having challenging terrain and limited resources.…”

“…Compared to the use of other datasets, topographic mapping is often a primary focus of the government, such as by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Usery et al [24] has provided a thorough review of relevant GeoAI applications in topographic mapping, so we will focus on reviewing application using remote sensing images, street view images, and geoscientific data.…”

“…Natural features, subsurface entities, and man-made structures can all be recorded on the undulating contour-mapped surface. 19 The viewer (or surgeon) can therefore appreciate the form of the land (or the body), its boundaries (or anatomical landmarks), along with subsurface features such as sewers or pipes (or vessels, hernias, lipomas) and construction plans to alter the landscape (or to reconfigure the body). Digital techniques now permit extreme precision and topographic maps can be layered with data sets; each variable can be viewed in the context of other layers.…”
