“…In a series of experiments, researchers at FORC, Russia fabricated several GeO 2 doped fibers with concentrations varying from 51 mol % to 97 mol % [10][11][12]. The losses were lower than 120dB/km at 1.9-2 μm for all of these fibers.…”

“…A fiber preform about 20 cm in length was fabricated using the standard MCVD method [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. Seven GeO 2 -SiO 2 layers were successively deposited onto a high-quality synthetic fused silica substrate tube Heraeus ® F300 20 × 2mm, which after consolidation was jacketed by the 27 × 10mm tube resulting in approximately a D pref = 18 mm preform outer diameter.…”

“…The lack of polishing agents during the final consolidation stage of the MCVD process left the innermost core layer unprotected from GeO 2 evaporation, and above 70% a deep gap appeared. One of the consequences of this are tensile stresses, gradually downshifting the refractive index in the area around the central gap [16]. Two GeO 2 -SiO 2 layers formed a diffusive transition zone between the core and the cladding, also producing a certain stress influence on the surrounding regions.…”

“…Davey et al [10], Gur'yanov et al [11] and Bubnov et al [12] suggested that the dip in the index profile adds to the losses in high GeO 2 -doped fibers.…”
