GenusPimelea(Thymelaeaceae) in New Zealand 5. The taxonomic treatment of five endemic species with both adaxial and abaxial leaf hair

Abstract: New Zealand Pimelea species with hair cover on both adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces include three established taxa that are redescribed and, where necessary, typified. Pimelea sericeovillosa is a cushion plant (three subspecies sericeovillosa, pulvinaris and alta). Pimelea aridula, with two subspecies (aridula and oliga) and Pimelea concinna are medium-sized, erect shrubs. All live inland in the South Island mountains. Pimelea barbata is a scarce, procumbent new species (two subspecies barbata and omoia) and… Show more

“…The Pimelea genus Banks & Sol.ex Gaertn., encompassing small shrub and forb species commonly known as rice flowers, is indigenous to Australia, Lord Howe Island, New Zealand, and the island of Timor. A thorough exploration based on herbarium records and diverse botanical studies has unveiled a total of 140 distinct Pimelea species [1]. Among these, four species, viz., P. simplex F. Muell.…”

“…Rye (1999) later suggested that the boundaries of the proposed sections are unresolved and require work, particularly with addressing the placement of the New Zealand species. Burrows (2008Burrows ( , 2011 agreed, noting that some New Zealand species of Pimelea do not fit well with Rye's infrageneric classification, and as such it was not adopted for the species occurring in New Zealand. Instead, the New Zealand taxa were informally divided into two groups: those with leaf hair and those without (Burrows 2008).…”
