Genotyping-by-sequencing provides new genetic and taxonomic insights in the critical group of Centaurea tenorei

Abstract: Centaurea L. is one of the most widespread, differentiated, and critical genera of Asteraceae in the Euro-Mediterranean area, with more than 100 currently recognized species inhabiting the region. The controversial C. tenorei group, narrowly endemic to the Peninsula of Sorrento (Campania region, southern Italy), includes three weakly differentiated microspecies: C. tenorei Guss. ex Lacaita, C. montaltensis (Fiori) Peruzzi and C. lacaitae Peruzzi. However, their taxonomic distinctiveness and relationships with … Show more

“…GBS involves restriction enzymes for genome complexity reduction and next-generation sequencing (NGS) for SNP discovery and genotyping 28 . GBS method is suitable for population, taxonomic, and phylogenetic studies 29 , 30 , offering a cost-effective, high-throughput sequencing method for various species, including apple, barley, Brassica , maize, rice, wheat, and chickpea 31 37 . The findings from this study provide essential genetic information for establishing conservation and management strategies for highly vulnerable mountain species affected by climate change in Korea.…”

“…group in the Balkans ( Novaković et al 2022 ), and the C. tenorei Guss. ex Lacaita group in southern Italy ( De Luca et al 2023 ). A great gap of taxonomic knowledge still remains for several taxa endemic to the central Mediterranean included in C. sect.…”
