Genotypic Characterization and Multivariate Survival Analysis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in Taiwan

Abstract: In Taiwan, as in other areas of Asia, the incidence of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is low. A retrospective analysis was conducted to elucidate the clinicopathologic features of CLL patients in Taiwan. Of the 47 cases of CLL enrolled in this study, 45 were immunophenotyped as B-CLL; the other 2 were T-CLL. It was found that the lower the Binet and Rai stages of the B-CLL, the longer patients survive (p = 0.0131 and 0.0142, respectively). Univariate analysis showed that fatigue, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly… Show more

“…CLL is a typical malignancy that displays ethnic differences: Although it is one of the most common leukemia in Caucasians, it is extremely rare in Asian countries [1, 2]. While the incidence rate (per 100,000 person-years) of CLL is 3.83 in Caucasians [2], it is only 0.04 in Korea [3], 0.48 in Japan [4], 0.6 in Koreans residing in America, and 0.8 in Chinese residing in America [5].…”

“…35 Like FL, however, the pathology, treatment response and disease course of Asian CLL cases are, however, no different. [36][37][38] Finally, in the few migrants studies published, a gradual but incomplete Westernization in disease pattern is seen in all groups of B cell lymphomas in Asian migrants to North American, suggesting short term environmental factors may play a significant role in the development of these diseases. 20,39 Several regional issues also need to be highlighted in B cell lymphoma in Asians.…”
