Genotype‐isolate interaction for resistance to black stem in sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

Abstract: Two experiments were undertaken to determine the partial resistance of sunflower genotypes to seven isolates of Phoma macdonaldii . In the first experiment, 28 genotypes, including recombinant inbred lines and their parents, M6 mutant lines developed by gamma irradiation, and some genotypes from different geographical origins, were used. The experiment consisted of a split-plot design with three replications, each with 12 seedlings per genotype per isolate, in controlled conditions. Seven days after inoculatio… Show more

“…The method has been used for the identifi cation of isolate-specifi c interactions of Septoria tritici Roberge in Desmaz. in detached leaf tests on wheat (Arraiano and Brown, 2006) and for black stem (caused by Phoma macdonaldii Boerema) resistance in sunfl ower (Helianthus annuus L.) (Darvishzadeh et al, 2007). In both cases, the method was used to analyze diff erences in the quantitative response to specifi c pathogen isolates.…”

“…The identified QTLs in this experiment have been detected in favourable conditions for disease development (Roustaee et al ., 2000c). In another programme at this laboratory, an experiment has been repeated with 12 genotypes challenged by seven isolates in the same favourable environmental conditions and the difference between the two tests was not significant (Darvishzadeh et al ., 2007). However, any changes in experimental conditions affecting disease development, may have an effect on QTLs.…”

“…Thus, vigor observations in culture in vitro can explain a part of variation of this trait in nursery and can be used for the early screening of the adult vigor. For Darvishzadeh (2007), the fair correlations could be used to screen some genotypes at early stage.…”
