Genotype × Environment Interaction of Mosaic Disease, Root Yields and Total Carotene Concentration of Yellow-Fleshed Cassava in Nigeria

Abstract: Twenty-one yellow-fleshed cassava genotypes were evaluated over two years in five major cassava growing agroecological zones in Nigeria. The trials were established in a randomized complete block design with four replications to assess genotype performance and Genotype × Environment interaction for cassava mosaic disease (CMD), fresh and dry root yield (FYLD; DYLD), root dry matter content (DMC), and total carotene concentration (TCC). Combined analysis of variance showed significant differences (P<0.001) a… Show more

“…Parent-offspring regression analysis confirmed high heritability (˃0.60) for the trait [53][54][55]. High heritability for carotenoids content in cassava is further confirmed in stability studies assessing the relative importance of genotype, environment, and genotype-by-environment interaction [56][57][58] and estimations of general and specific combining ability effects [59]. An analysis of the segregation for TCC in large full-sib and self-pollinated families was conducted aiming at identifying patterns that could be explained by Mendelian genetics [53,54].…”

“…However, severities of CGM across the genotypes were relatively low [18,19]. It is a fundamental knowledge in crop science that crop growth has positive and significant relationship with yield [20,21] however; trend in disease severity and tuber yield differed. All the genotypes recorded high yield per hectare.…”

“…Effects from genotype and environment that showed highly significant mean square reflected genotypic differences towards adaptive to different environments, thus, the highly significant G × E effects for fresh root yield suggest that clones may be selected for adaptation to specific environment (Aina et al, 2009). It also suggests that, there is the need for multi-environmental testing to identify good performers for specific environments (Akinwale et al, 2011;Maroya et al, 2012).…”
