Genotype-by-environment interaction in coast redwood outside natural distribution - search for environmental cues

Abstract: Background: Effective matching of genotypes and environments is required for the species to reach optimal productivity and act effectively for carbon sequestration. A common garden experiment across five different environments was undertaken to assess genotype x environment interaction (GxE) of coast redwood in order to understand the performance of genotypes across environments. Results: The quantitative genetic analysis discovered no GxE between investigated environments for diameter at breast height (DBH). … Show more

“…Because of these genetic traits Sequoia has been considered a prospective timber species for its potential adaptability out of its natural range in other countries with similar or environmentally different conditions in the face of climate change. Sequoia has been grown out of its endemic California region with varying degrees of success, depending upon the trial locations and climatic conditions, in different parts of the world, including France, Germany, Spain, Chile, Turkey, South Africa, and New Zealand (Kuser et al 1995;Meason et al 2016;Klápštĕ et al 2020;Breidenbach et al 2020;Ahuja 2021). Sequoia is generally vulnerable to prolonged frost conditions.…”

“…Therefore, the optimal parameters to realize the benefits of genomic selection for herbivory may need more research. However, more evidence of the superior performance of genomic models in resistance studies is available from pathosystems in P. radiata ( Klápště, Meason, et al 2020 ) and other conifers ( Resende et al 2012 ; Carpenter et al 2018 ; González-Camacho et al 2018 ).…”

“…For this reason, clonal forestry offers prospects for propagating selected genotypes by tissue culture. Sequoia has been grown out of its endemic region with varying degrees of success in different parts of the world, including France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Turkey, Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand (Kuser et al, 1995;Meason et al, 2016;Klápštĕ et al, 2020).…”
