Genomic selection in pigs: state of the art and perspectives

Abstract: Genomic selection, that is based on the prediction of the breeding value (the genomic breeding value or GEBV) of the animals considering genomic information, is changing breeding strategies and approaches in dairy cattle and in several other livestock species. The starting points for the application of genomic selection in pigs were the development of a first commercial singlenucleotide polymorphism panel for high throughput genotyping, the sequencing of the pig genome and the application of statistical and me… Show more

“…An increased importance has been attached to FE traits in animal breeding to consider the efficient conversion of nutrients into body mass and as a major factor driving the productivity and the profitableness of the production system (Arthur and Herd 2005 ). Thus, FE and related traits are a major target for genomic selection strategies in livestock breeding (current state of research summarized by Samorè and Fontanesi 2016 ). The variation in FE is related to extrinsic factors like the formulation and energy density of diets, management, and climatic conditions.…”

“…Quite soon, it is expected that SNP genotyping technologies will be substituted by sequencing-based approaches in genomic selection, as sequencing costs should decrease with the introduction of new sequencing approaches and technologies. However, despite the decrease in costs, sequencing might still be too expensive for implementation on a large number of animals [51].…”
