Genomic insights into a new acidophilic, copper-resistantDesulfosporosinusisolate from the oxidized tailings area of an abandoned gold mine

Abstract: Microbial sulfate reduction in acid mine drainage is still considered to be confined to anoxic conditions, although several reports have shown that sulfate-reducing bacteria occur under microaerophilic or aerobic conditions. We have measured sulfate reduction rates of up to 60 nmol S cm(-3) day(-1) in oxidized layers of gold mine tailings in Kuzbass (SW Siberia). A novel, acidophilic, copper-tolerant Desulfosporosinus sp. I2 was isolated from the same sample and its genome was sequenced. The genomic analysis a… Show more

“…In Air+ group, the obvious increase of Desulfosporosinus biomass implied Desulfosporosinus is not the strict anaerobes [18]. Several papers have shown that some sulfate-reducing bacteria occur under microaerophilic or aerobic conditions, and reported the use and resistance mechanism of Desulfosporosinus to oxygen [18,19]. The results of Desulfosporosinus were consistent with the previous reports about sulfate-reducing bacteria.…”

“…In addition to Azotobacter, we identified Oxobacter, Desulfotomaculum, and Desulfosporosinus abundances as being significantly correlated with nifH abundances. These genera also have the genomic potential for nitrogen fixation [49][50][51]. Our results here and in the field trial indicate that nitrogen fixation may be an Finally, on day 9, we compared soil microbiomes derived from DNA and RNA (cDNA) extractions to determine if there was a difference in the present versus active components of the communities (Fig.…”

“…Desulfosporosinus acidiphilus [2] and Desulfosporosinus acididurans [19], both isolated from mining environments, represent the only two validly described, moderately acidophilic sulfate-reducing bacteria. Two other acidophilic Desulfosporosinus have been isolated and their genomes are available [1], [15]. Desulfosporosinus spp.…”
