Genomes of the wild beets Beta patula and Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima

Abstract: We present draft genome assemblies of Beta patula, a critically endangered wild beet endemic to the Madeira archipelago, and of the closely related Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima (sea beet). Evidence-based reference gene sets for B. patula and sea beet were generated, consisting of 25 127 and 27 662 genes, respectively. The genomes and gene sets of the two wild beets were compared with their cultivated sister taxon B. vulgaris ssp. vulgaris (sugar beet). Large syntenic regions were identified, and a display tool … Show more

“…The protein sequences of H. ammodendron and seven other sequenced plant species, namely six Amaranthaceae species ( S. aralocaspica , B. vulgaris , Beta patula , 65 C. quinoa , S. oleracea , and A. hypochondriacus ) and one outgroup species ( A. thaliana ), were used for the phylogenetic analysis. Single-copy orthogroups among the eight species were distinguished using OrthoFinder v2.3.11 66 with the DIAMOND aligner and the Markov cluster algorithm.…”

“…With the availability of genome sequences of sugar beet (B. vulgaris) and wild beet (B. vulgaris ssp. maritima), they can be good sources of stressrelated studies in crops [28,29]. Moreover, isolation of highly salt-and drought-tolerant beet genotypes [16,30,31] and beets' capability of growing in reclaimed lands, which are adversely affected by salt, sodicity, and poor nutrient availability [32][33][34], will help plant breeders to develop stress-resistant traits and propagate the genetic variability in beets.…”

“…Peptides belonging to the trypsin inhibitor branch and antimicrobial peptide branch have a calculated isoelectric point of 6.7 ± 1.4 and 8.0 ± 1.3, respectively. The hit with highest similarity to bevuTI-I was found in the Beta patula genome (GenBank ID: VASJ01001109.1). The only difference from bevuTI-I is an insertion of an alanine residue at position 11.…”
