Genome-wide identification and characterization of novel genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis in Salvia miltiorrhiza

Abstract: Terpenoids are the largest class of plant secondary metabolites and have attracted widespread interest. Salvia miltiorrhiza, belonging to the largest and most widely distributed genus in the mint family, is a model medicinal plant with great economic and medicinal value. Diterpenoid tanshinones are the major lipophilic bioactive components in S. miltiorrhiza. Systematic analysis of genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis has not been reported to date. Searching the recently available working draft of the S. m… Show more

“…Of these, 59% of diTPS candidates and 44% of P450 candidates represented FL sequences. Except for R. officinalis (presumably due to the lower assembly quality), all species revealed multimember diTPS and P450 candidate families, consistent with gene family sizes in some related species (Chen et al, 2011;Keeling et al, 2011a;Ma et al, 2012).…”

“…Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (line 993, plants kindly provided by Prof. Xian'en Li) was grown in a field nursery at the Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Beijing, China (Ma et al 2012). Flowers, healthy leaves, young stems and roots with diameters about 0.5 cm were collected from 2-year-old plants.…”

“…S. miltiorrhiza genes involved in secondary metabolism (Ma et al 2012;Li and Lu 2014;Zhang et al 2014a, b), stress response ) and miRNA pathway Lu 2013, 2014) have been intensively studied recently. However, there is no information available for S. miltiorrhiza mlncRNAs.…”

“…Former studies revealed the metabolic pathway of tanshinones (Ma et al 2012;Yang et al 2013). The product of the 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway, geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP), is catalyzed by Copalyl diphosphate synthase 1 (SmCPS1) and Kaurene synthase like (SmKSL) together into miltiradiene (Cui et al 2015), and then processed by CYP76AH1 to produce various tanshinone precursors (Guo et al 2013).…”
