Genome-wide identification and characterization of the Populus WRKY transcription factor family and analysis of their expression in response to biotic and abiotic stresses

Abstract: Highlight textThis study presents the genome-wide characterization of the Populus WRKY family under biotic and abiotic stresses. Overexpression of an SA-inducible gene, PtrWRKY89, enhanced resistance to pathogens in transgenic poplar.

“…WRKY TFs also regulate the leaf senescence process, for example, AtWRKY57 represses leaf senescence by interacting with JAZ4/JAZ8 (JASMONATE ZIM‐DOMAIN4/8) and IAA29 (Indole Acetic Acid 29), which are the repressors of the JA and Auxin signaling pathways, respectively. JAZ4/8 and IAA29 interact with WRKY57 competitively, and exhibit different functions in JA‐induced leaf senescence, which is consistent with the opposing functions of JA and auxin in leaf senescence (Jiang et al ). AtWRKY53 and AtWRKY70 were positive and negative regulators of senescence in Arabidopsis , respectively (Hu et al ).…”

“…Marker genes for the SA signaling pathway (Derksen et al ., ; Jiang et al ., ), pathogenesis‐related gene 1 ( PR‐1 ) and two WRKY genes ( WRKY 70 , WRKY 89 ) were significantly up‐regulated by rust infection (Fig. b; Table ).…”

“…For example, 61 of the PtrWRKY genes in Populus are induced by biotic and abiotic treatments, such as Marssonina bruuea , salicylic acid (SA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), wounding, cold and salinity (Jiang et al, 2014). In rice, expression of OsWRKY 71 gene is induced by cold stress (Kim et al, 2016), while it also encodes a transcriptional repressor of GA signaling in aleurone cells (Zhang et al, 2004).…”
