Genome-Wide Association Study of Salt Tolerance at the Seed Germination Stage in Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.)

Abstract: Soil salinization seriously affects the growth and distribution of flax. However, there is little information about the salt tolerance of flax. In this study, the salt tolerance of 200 diverse flax accessions during the germination stage was evaluated, and then the Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) was carried out based on the relative germination rate (RGR), relative shoot length (RSL) and relative root length (RRL), whereby quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to salt tolerance were identified. The resu… Show more

“…There is no genome-wide study on wheat seedlings, especially keeping the shoot length, root length, and dry and fresh weights of the shoot and root as tolerance indicators for the association study. However, this phenomenon has also been reported in some crops, e.g., rice ( Shi et al, 2017 ; Batayeva et al, 2018 ; Islam et al, 2022 ), flax ( Li et al, 2022 ), Camelina ( Luo, Szczepanek, and Abdel-Haleem, 2020 ), and barley ( Ahmadi-Ochtapeh et al, 2015 ).…”

“…OsABA8ox1 -kd overexpressing seedlings had a higher level of ABA, reduced ROS contents, and Na + /K + ratio under salinity stress compared to non-transgenic plants ( Liu et al, 2022c ). Genetic engineering has achieved a landmark position in molecular breeding because of its role in developing several tolerant crop cultivars ( Li et al, 2022a ; Liu et al, 2022b ).…”

“…Previous studies have investigated the salinity response in flax using a variety of techniques [4]. A total of 902 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected by a Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) of 200 diverse flax varieties following saline stress [4]. They also found that oil flax was more tolerant than fiber flax under saline Plants 2022, 11, 2053 2 of 20 stress [4].…”
