In the early classical texts of Ayurveda, there are descriptions regarding the genetic basis of diseases. The Caraka Sahitā explains that the human body in its entirety is represented in a seed form in the male and female reproductive elements. The complete blue print is called a bīja, which is composed of many components called the bījabhāgas. The bījabhāgas are further made up of smaller parts called as the bījabhāga avayavas. Each organ of the body is formed from specific bījabhāgas or bījabhāga avayavas. Such bījabhāgas or bījabhāga avayavas are called as janakas (progenitors) of specific structures of the body and when defective can cause partial or total defects or absence of specific organs or parts of the body. Birth defects have been listed and described in the early Ayurvedic texts attributing defects of bījabhāgas and bījabhāga avayavas as the underlying cause. Blindness by birth and sexual anomalies are examples. Additionally, specific diseases have also been said to originate from defects in the components and component parts of the reproductive elements. Examples are skin diseases and haemorrhoids. The texts also differentiate between diseases originating from familial inheritance and other causes that affect the bījabhāgas. Congenital diseases are also listed and described separately. This paper is an attempt to critically review the descriptions related to medical genetics in the early classical texts of Ayurveda and to contextualise these speculations in the backdrop of the historical evolution of medical knowledge in the world.

Az életmód változásával és a gyorséttermi láncok elterjedésével egyre nagyobb problémát jelent az elhízás az egész világon. Indiában a férfiak 31%-a, a nők 29%-a túlsúlyos, és az elhízás az utóbbi 11 évben növekvő tendenciát mutat. Az elhízás növeli számos betegség kialakulásának esélyét, mint például a szív-és érrendszeri betegségek, refluxbetegség, gastrointestinalis tumorok és alvási apnoe. Műtétek során a szövődményekkel még nem járó elhízás is súlyos komplikációkat okozhat. Az Ájurvédában a betegségek kialakulásáért a 3 dosha -vata, pitta, kapha -egyensúlyának felborulása a felelős. A 3 dosha aránya egyénenként változik, és meghatározza az egyéni testalkatot. Egy indiai kutatócsoport kimutatta, hogy az ájurvédikus testtípus-besorolás kapcsolatba hozható a gyulladásos és oxidatívstressz-faktorok génjeivel, a DNS-metilációval és a cardiovascularis betegségek kialakulásának esélyeivel. In India, 31% of men and 29% of women are overweight, which is a growing trend over the last 11 years. Obesity increases the risk of many diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, reflux disease, gastrointestinal tumors, and sleep apnea. Obesity without complications can also cause serious complications during surgery. In Ayurveda the formation of diseases depends on the balance of the three doshas -vata, pitta, kapha. The rate of three doshas varies depending on the body constitution of the indvidual. Studies of an Indian research group have shown that Ayurvedic body type classification may be associated with genes of inflammation and oxidative stress factors, the rate of DNA methylation and development of cardiovascular diseases. Among the numerous scientific works of Avicenna (980-1037), the magnificent Persian polihistor, the five-volume-long Kanun fi Tib / Canon of Medicine, written 1013-1021) is the most outstanding. The second and fifth volumes contain the names of herbs Avicenna used ever successfully to cure different conditions. His work was founded by both antique GreekRoman and Far-Eastern medicine. Avicenna represented the originally Galen's "contraria contrariis" medical principle as he described over 600 compound preparations. Many herbs listed in the Canon are still widely administered. He also invented water-vapour distillation. Avicenna applied beyond herbs also preparations containing animal or mineral materials and their combinations. Szellemi képességeit illetően, korabeli leírások szerint már 10 éves korában fejből tudta a korán szövegét, 16 évesen pedig már gyakorolta a gyógyítás művészetét. Avicenna az iszlám kultúra kimagasló személyisége volt. Élete során Afshana, Bukhara, Gurgonj, Nissa, Baward, Tus, Chaggan, Samangan, Gorgan, Raly, Hamadan, Isfahan belső-ázsiai városokban működött, keresve a békét és stabilitást, ezért az arabok, és a törökök is ki akarták sajátítani maguknak [1][2][3][4][5]. Avicenna rendkívüli megfigyelőképességével és tudásszomjával új irányt mutatott a természettudományban. Avicenna több mint 100 tudományos művet írt. Nevéhez fűződik a vízgőzdesztilláló-készülék és a termométer feltalálása is [6].
