Genome sequencing of herb Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) unravels key genes behind its strong medicinal properties

Abstract: BackgroundKrishna Tulsi, a member of Lamiaceae family, is a herb well known for its spiritual, religious and medicinal importance in India. The common name of this plant is ‘Tulsi’ (or ‘Tulasi’ or ‘Thulasi’) and is considered sacred by Hindus. We present the draft genome of Ocimum tenuiflurum L (subtype Krishna Tulsi) in this report. The paired-end and mate-pair sequence libraries were generated for the whole genome sequenced with the Illumina Hiseq 1000, resulting in an assembled genome of 374 Mb, with a geno… Show more

“…Many of these plant sesterterpenes were isolated from the mint family (Lamiaceae) and have been implicated in plant defense (4)(5)(6)(7). Although large transcriptome datasets for the mint family have been generated (8), very limited genome sequences for the Lamiaceae are currently available (9,10).…”

“…Note that one of the carnivorous taxa, Genlipea aurea, also possessed GO annotations. Lastly, the genomes of the two non-carnivorous plants most closely related to carnivorous taxa were included: Ocimum tenuiflorum (Upadhyay et al, 2015), closest sequenced relative of Byblip, Genlipea, Pinguicula, and Utricularia; and Actinidia chinenpip (Swarbreck et al, 2008), closest sequenced relative of Darlingtonia, Heliamphora, Roridula, and Sarracenia. Boea hygrometrica, included for its available annotations, is also within the order of Genlipea and Utricularia.…”

“…Recently, two genomes of Ocimum tenuiflorum have been reported 9,10 that provide a draft catalogue of genes and proteins present in this species. Also, transcriptome wide protein expression based studies are being carried out 9,11 towards gaining the important insights about secondary metabolite biosynthetic pathways 12 . However, a systems level study explaining complex web of interactions among various proteins that can provide first-hand intuition about cooperation at molecular level is still lacking in tulsi.…”
