Genome Analyses of Three Strains of Rhodobacter sphaeroides : Evidence of Rapid Evolution of Chromosome II

Abstract: Three strains of Rhodobacter sphaeroides of diverse origin have been under investigation in our laboratory for their genome complexities, including the presence of multiple chromosomes and the distribution of essential genes within their genomes. The genome of R. sphaeroides 2.4.1 has been completely sequenced and fully annotated, and now two additional strains (ATCC 17019 and ATCC 17025) of R. sphaeroides have been sequenced. Thus, genome comparisons have become a useful approach in determining the evolutiona… Show more

“…MC-1) showed no channel activity in previous studies (7). Of the bacteria containing the remaining 26 homologues, six of them were commercially available: B. licheniformis, isolated from soil and plant material (27), and L. vestfoldensis (28), R. sphaeroides (29), S. putrefaciens (30), R. denitrificans (31), and Oceanicaulis sp. (32) isolated from sea water (28 -33).…”

“…Similar to Roseobacter, members of Rhodobacter are also metabolically versatile and exhibit genomic complexity (Nereng and Kaplan, 1999;Choudhary et al, 2004Choudhary et al, , 2007). …”

“…Comparative genome analysis shows that while the chromosome gene organization of WS8N is similar to that of previously sequenced strains of R. sphaeroides, the plasmid composition differs considerably, with ATCC_17029 having one, WS8N and KD131 each having two (6), and 2.4.1 and ATCC_17025 each having five (2).…”
