Abstract: -The male and female genitaliae of three species of the genus Heilipus Germar (H. lauri Boheman, H. pittieri Barber and H. trifasciatus Fabricius) that damage avocado fruits (Persea americana Mill.) in Mexico and Costa Rica are described and illustrated. The aedeagus, spiculum gastrale, styli of 8 th sternite are different in each one of the three species studied and can be used for specifi c identifi cation.KEY WORDS: Avocado weevil, description, morphology, Molytinae RESUMEN -La genitalia masculina y femenin… Show more

“…Male and female genitalia have been used by taxonomists as useful characters for species identification (Gutiérrez ). Several studies indicate that morphological differences observed in genitalia provide significant elements in solving phylogenetic problems (Pilares , Costa et al 1997, Gutiérrez , Hernández , Castañeda‐Vildózola et al , Rosa et al 2010). Conversely, differences in external genitalia have an important biological function, such as in reproductive behavior, fertilization of eggs, and semen storage (Hernández ).…”

“…Putative differences observed were verified by inspection of the genitalia, by means of a binocular microscope (Zeiss model Stemi DV4) with 10X magnification. For genital dissection, individuals were macerated and cleared in a KOH solution (10%) for 15 min, at 80 °C to promote dissolving of fat tissue, thus facilitating visibility of the reproductive structures as described by Castañeda-Vildózola et al 2007.…”
