Genetics of sexual Ostracoda from a low Arctic site

Abstract: Members of the crustacean subclass Ostracoda show a high incidence of transitions from sexual to asexual reproduction. The cause of these shifts remains uncertain, perhaps because there have been few genetic studies on the group. The present study examined sex ratios and allozyme variation in 7 sexual species of ostracodes from ponds at a low Arctic site. Sex ratios in most species were strongly female-biased. Detailed study of Cyprinotus glaucus indicated that sex ratios were heterogeneous among populations, b… Show more

“…Female-biased sex ratios are common among dioecious species of Ostracoda (McKenzie, 1971;Tetart, 1975;Bell, 1982;Harten, 1983;Havel et a!., 1990) and are usually explained in terms of reduced longevity and sometimes reduced vitality of males (McKenzie, 1971;Tetart, 1975;Bell, 1982;Harten, 1983). “…Similarly, high levels of allele frequency divergence over microgeographical scales have been documented for ponddwelling species representing a range of taxa and breeding systems (e.g. Hebert & Payne, 1985;Havel et at., 1990). Those studies that have also included macrogeographical sampling indicate that the finescale divergence is only rarely accompanied by regional differentiation (Benzie, 1986;Schwartz & Hebert, 1987;Crease et at., 1990;Hebert et a!., 1993).…”

“…Given that the genetic data of both previous breeding trials (Chaplin, 1991(Chaplin, , 1992 and this paper indicate that Mpi' is a reliable indicator of the sexual lineage, it is likely that there is an excess of females even within the sexual lineage of the smallbrown morph. Such excesses may, in fact, be common within strictly sexual Ostracoda (Havel et a!., 1990). In the case of the small-brown morph in Lake Purrumbete, the presence of parthenogens further increases the extent of the female bias of the sex ratio.…”

“…Large excesses of females are common in mixed-sex populations of ostracods. This is true even of populations for which their exclusive reliance upon sexual reproduction has been verified with allozyme data (Havel et al, 1990). Although the basis for these excesses of females has not been investigated experimentally for any species, it is often explained in terms of reduced longevity and sometimes reduced vitality of males (McKenzie, 1971;Tetart, 1975;Harten, 1983).…”
