Genetics of growth in piglets and the association with homogeneity of body weight within litters

Abstract: The objective of this study was to examine the genetic basis of homogeneity in piglets and the genetic correlations with litter size and growth during lactation. Genetic parameters for variation in piglet BW within litters at birth and at 3 wk of age, and in the BW of individual piglets at 3 wk (BW3) were estimated from the Norwegian Landrace nucleus population. Data on BW3 were collected from 146,572 piglets from 14,045 litters in 58 herds. Body weight at birth and at 3 wk of age was recorded for 13,318 pigle… Show more

“…Table 2 shows that there is a positive correlation between NBA and CVBWT. This observation supports reports by Canario et al (2010), who suggested that variation in birth weight of litter mates could be owing to differences in litter size and uterine capacity, size of the placenta and interactions among these factors. The NBA for gilts was lower (P <0.05) than that for multiparous sows, except for those greater than parity 6 (Table 3).…”

“…The number of teats a sow has limits the number of piglets it can nurture to weaning. When a sow farrows more piglets in a litter than its number of teats, the excess piglets have to be fostered (Canario et al, 2010). To date, sows from most breeds exhibit NBA of over 12 (Umesiobi, 2009).…”

“…Hermesch et al (2001) and Kaufmann et al (2000) estimated lower direct heritabilities of BW in piglets using an animal model with direct and maternal effects. On the contrary, Canario et al (2010) reported higher heritability (0.32 ± 0.06) of BW in Landrace individual piglets with a low magnitude of permanent effects (0.007) of litters. In the present study, estimate of litter heritability (c 2 ) ranged from 0.34 ± 0.05 to 0.38 ± 0.03.…”

“…06-0 . 11 (Damgaard et al, 2003 ;Wittenburg et al, 2008;Canario et al, 2010). In some older studies, ANOVA techniques were used to analyse within-family variances of dairy bulls with large offspring groups, and substantial differences between sires were found (Van Vleck, 1968 ;Clay et al, 1979).…”
