This article presents a generative design exploration methodology utilized to assist designers in problem structuring and decision-making in a multi-disciplinary setting. This novel design exploration methodology is based on the hybridization of a genetic algorithm (GA) and the Theory of Innovative Problem Solving (TRIZ). This methodology allows investigation of unexpected solutions, application of innovative ideas for resolving contradictory design objectives, and continuous interaction between designers and the search engine. In this study, the design case of a mid-rise apartment complex is used to examine the capacity of the proposed multi-agent design exploration method. Accordingly, both quality and numeric performance-based values of the design alternatives, including the visual appearance of the complex and apartments’ shadows over one another, structural and energy efficiency, and life-cycle impact of the building’s structural system, are investigated to demonstrate the usability and benefits of the developed method.

This paper presents research in the development of heuristic evolutionary algorithms (EAs) for generating and exploring differentiated force-based structures. The algorithm is weighted toward design exploration of topological differentiation while including specific structural and material constraints. An embryological EA model is employed to “grow” networks of mass-spring elements achieving desired mesh densities that resolve themselves in tensile force (form-active) equilibrium. The primal quadrilateral quadrisection method serves as the foundation for a range of extensible subdivision methods. Unique to this research, the quad is addressed as a “cell” rather than a topological or geometric construct, allowing for the contents of the cell to vary in number of mass-spring elements and orientation. In this research, this approach has been termed the quadrilateral quadrisection with n variable topological transformation method. This research culminates with the introduction of a method for grafting meshes where emergent features from the evolved meshes can be transposed and replicated in an explicit yet informed manner. The EA and grafting methods function within a Java-based software called springFORM, developed in previous research, which utilizes a mass-spring based library for solving force equilibrium and allows for both active (manual) and algorithmic topology manipulation. In application to a specific complex tensile mesh, the design framework, which combines the generative EA and mesh grafting method, is shown to produce emergent and highly differentiated topological arrangements that negotiate the specific relationships among a desired maximal mesh density, geometric patterning, and equalized force distribution.

Indoor multi-functional sports arenas are a complex building type. Integration of the (multi-) functional space and of the large-span structure of the roof mainly determines the overall geometry of the building, and is one of the most challenging phases of the design. Several interdisciplinary numeric assessments and numerous solutions with diverse geometries (rather than just several specific types) should be considered to make informed design decisions. To support the design exploration in the early design stage for multi-functional arenas, this paper proposes a design process that is composed of a flexible parametric model, a framework of interdisciplinary assessment criteria, and multi-objective optimization (MOO) with post-process tools. The parametric model is defined based on the basic spatial composition of arenas and is flexible to provide a broader design space, including diverse solutions with three frequently-used structural types. The framework of assessment criteria includes indicators of viewing quality for spectators, acoustics, and structures, which can evaluate the design in different aspects. Based on certain assessment criteria, the MOO can be used to search for good designs in the broader space, and the post-process tools facilitate the designer to analyse the results. Two typical arenas (the Barclay Centre and the O2 Arena) are selected as real case studies to demonstrate the proposed process and assess the capacity. Results of the case studies validate the efficacy of the process and the necessity of the broader design space to include diverse solutions with multiple structural types.
