Genetically determined thyroid disease and risk of preeclampsia : a Mendelian Randomization study

Abstract

Background: Observational studies suggest a possible correlation between thyroid disease and preeclampsia. However, the causal relationship between them is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to examine at the potential links between thyroid illness and preeclampsia. METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) research was conducted using data from a genome-wide association analysis to investigate the probable causal influence of thyroid disease and preeclampsia. In this study, the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary result. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that hypothyroidism (OR=3.804, 95% CI: 1.121-12.911; p=0.0321), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) (OR=1.128, 95% CI: 1.009-1.260; p=0.0340) were positively associated with preeclampsia. No significant association was found between genetic predisposition to hyperthyroidism and preeclampsia. CONCLUSION: This MR study found a positive association between genetically predicted hypothyroidism, TSH and preeclampsia.
