Genetic variation of Sporothrix globosa isolates from diverse geographic and clinical origins in China

Abstract: Sporothrix globosa is the main causative agent of sporotrichosis, a common mycosis that usually affects the skin, in China. Despite increasing efforts in the molecular identification of this fungal pathogen, its modes of transmission and epidemiology remain poorly understood. The goals of this study were to assess the genetic diversity of S. globosa using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis and to assess the correlation of AFLP profiles with the geographic origins, growth rates, clinical for… Show more

“…S . globosa is the most extensively studied species, with a report on North, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia [ 21 ]. Other reports in our country have revealed two species that are etiological agents of human sporotrichosis [ 2 , 7 ].…”

“…The distribution of S . globosa has been reported in many countries [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 8 , 13 , 21 , 22 ]. A few reports of clinical presentations of this species exist; most presentations were lymphocutaneous, with fixed cutaneous being a less frequent disseminated presentation [ 4 , 8 , 22 ].…”

“…Sporotrichosis has long been a serious endemic disease in Northeast China. Although both S schenckii and S globosa are both isolated from the lesions of sporotrichosis patients in China, only S globosa has been identified in cases in Jilin Province until now . Compared to previous reports, there has been no obvious change in the characteristics of the sporotrichosis epidemic in Jilin Province.…”

“…Sporotrichosis is a disease involving chronic granulomatous inflammation of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues and lymphatic vessels caused by pathogenic Sporothrix species, 1 predominantly Sporothrix schenckii , Sporothrix brasiliensis and Sporothrix globosa 2 . Sporothrix globosa is distributed worldwide but is particularly endemic in northeast China 3 . The spontaneous cure of sporotrichosis is rare so antifungal agents are necessary.…”
