Genetic variation in the clonal bryophyte Hylocomium splendens at hierarchical geographical scales in Scandinavia

Abstract: The widespread bryophyte Hylocomium splendens was sampled in a hierarchical fashion from populations representing four Scandinavian vegetation zones. Allozyme electrophoresis revealed variation at 11 out of 13 screened loci, allowing accurate identification of genotypes. From a total sample of 298 shoots 79 genotypes could be detected, giving the proportion of distinguishable genotypes (PD) of 0.265. The total allelic diversity (HT) based on polymorphic loci was 0.274. The relative differentiation among popula… Show more

“…The ubiquitous distribution (Persson and Viereck 1983) and high genetic variation (Cronberg et al 1997) of H. splendens populations are apparently in contrast to the notion that rarity of dioecious bryophytes results from failure in sexual reproduction (Longton 1992). Alternatively, establishment of H. splendens from sexual spores may occur, at least intermittently (Cronberg et al 1997;N. Cronberg, personal communication), contributing significantly and positively to the population growth rate.…”

“…1 The spatial distribution of H. splendens haplotypes in the sample plots in 1998 inferred from the genetical analysis. The shortest distance between the two sampling areas was 32 cm procedures for the analysis of nine enzymes systems followed Cronberg et al (1997) and Cronberg (2002). Homogenate from a single clone of Pleurozium schreberi was placed at five positions on every gel to provide a control against which relative bands in the other individuals could be scored.…”

“…Ellstrand and Roose 1987). Also, in presumably "clonal" bryophytes, molecular studies using isozymes and/or RAPDs detected some genetic differentiation even on small spatial scales (compare, e.g., Daniels 1982;Cronberg et al 1997;Cronberg 2002;Selkirk et al 1997).…”
