Genetic variation and diversity of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.)] genotypes assessed for millet head miner, Heliocheilus albipunctella resistance, in West Africa

Abstract: Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.), the major source of minerals and dietary energy for people living in the semi-arid regions of Sahel, is regularly damaged by millet head miner, Heliocheilus albipunctella. In order to identify the plant-based resistance sources for millet head miner along with high grain Fe and Zn, we have screened forty pearl millet genotypes, using an artificial infestation method.

“…Cenchrus americanus (L.) Morrone) (2n = 2x = 14) is a C 4 cereal crop that is important in safeguarding the security of food and forage in the arid and semiarid tropics due to its superior tolerance to high temperatures [4][5][6][7][8] . It is also a staple food of more than 90 million farmers living in poverty and is grown on more than 31.2 million hectares 9 . Pearl millet is an ideal model for understanding how plants use heat-related genes and mechanisms to thrive at warmer temperatures.…”

“…It provides a nutritive staple food grain for human consumption and forage for livestock. It is cultivated on about 31.2 million hectares in different agro-ecologies by over 90 million farmers [1,3]. In India, it is the fourth most important cereal crop, after rice, wheat, and maize, and is grown over an area of 6.93 million hectares (mha) with a production of 8.6 million tonnes (mt), with an average productivity of 1243 kg/hectare, accounting for two-thirds of national millet production.…”
