Genetic Variants of Serum Alpha-1-Antitrypsin (Pi Types) in a Breton Population, the Bigoudens

Abstract: Pi typing was carried out by high resolution isoelectric focusing in 397 Bigoudens and in 100 non-Bigouden Bretons. Gene frequencies were computed by the gene counting method. No difference between the two groups could be demonstrated, neither was there a deviation from the expected Hardy-Weinberg distribution nor a heterogeneity between the Bigouden villages. The results were significantly different (p < 0.02) from those reported in Normans.

“…When the present results were added to those of previous studies performed in France [8][9][10][11], an overall estimate of the PI*Z frequency, therefore based on 8,981 subjects, led to figures ranging from 0.0042 to 0.0225, with an average value of 0.0130 (table 2). Although these figures were not significantly different, such a large varia tion in the observed range (corresponding to ca.…”

“…Ten of these 16 reliable studies were carried out in healthy unrelated persons (HUP), most of whom were workers from Paris (51), Nancy (51), Bordeaux (51), Normandy (56), Languedoc‐Roussillon (57), Lyon (58), and Toulouse (51,60). The remaining six reliable studies were carried out in unrelated healthy people: four in Normandy (51, 54, 55, 61) and two in Brittany (52, 53). The remaining studies, including those carried out in Corsica, showed lower scores, and they should be considered with caution.…”
