Genetic variability of photosynthesis and water use in Balearic grapevine cultivars

Abstract: A comparison of photosynthetic characteristics of 20 cultivars of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) from Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) and two widespread cultivars, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, was made under irrigation as well as in response to drought. Although these cultivars share a common origin, a high variability was found for several photosynthetic characters under irrigation. Interestingly, these variations were significant for gas-exchange parameters (net CO 2 assimilation, stomatal conductanc… Show more

“…The existence of genetic variability in WUEi was demonstrated earlier by Bota et al (2001) and Gaudillère et al (2002), which measured WUEi and the surrogate character δ 13 C, respectively. However, as mentioned before, there are difficulties to estimate the whole plant WUE through WUEi.…”

“…Many studies performed at the leaf level have shown a wide range of intra-specific variability of WUEi among cultivars, (Gómez-Alonso and García-Romero 2010; Bota et al 2001;Costa et al 2012;Gaudillère et al 2002; Fig. 4 Relation between total water applied (rainfall from April to September + irrigation) and yield and crop water use efficiency.…”
