Genetic Variability in Hesperozygis ringens Benth. (Lamiaceae), an Endangered Aromatic and Medicinal Plant of Southern Brazil

Abstract: Hesperozygis ringens Benth. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic and medicinal plant, characterized by a high concentration of isopulegone; it is endemic to the mountains of southeast Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and currently is considered endangered. The present study evaluated the intra- and interpopulation genetic variability of H. ringens by means of RAPD and ISSR molecular markers. The results showed that H. ringens populations are genetically structured, with low gene flow between populations, confirming the fragme… Show more

“…Hesperozygis ringens (Benth.) Epling (Lamiaceae) is a woody herb, 20 to 50 cm high, native to rocky fields of the Pampa biome with a very branched stem (Fracaro and Echeverrigaray, 2006;Von Poser et al, 1996). Some studies have described a high production of essential oil by its leaves, with pulegone as major component (Ribeiro et al, 2010;Silva et al, 2014;Toni et al, 2014;Von Poser et al, 1996).…”

“…DNA-based molecular markers have the advantage of being free from environmental modulation. Inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) based on PCR amplification have been widely used for the study of population genetics in several medicinal plants (Bornet et al, 2002;Chen et al, 2006;Fracaro and Echeverrigaray, 2006;Li and Jin, 2008). ISSR primers of repeat motifs (microsatellites) that are abundant and dispersed throughout genomes anchor at either the 5' or 3' end with one or a few specific nucleotides.…”
