Genetic variability and inter-relationship studies among growth, yield and quality parameters in Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.)

Abstract: Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is probably one of the commercial and important vegetable crop after tomato at the global level. In India, Chilli is cultivated on an area of 3.76 lakh hectares with a production of 3.78 lakh tonnes and productivity of 10.02 tonnes per hectare (NHB, 2019). Since the productivity of the crop is low there is a demand for development of new varieties and hybrids with high productivity. Genetic divergence and extent of genetic variability are important for the genetic improvement of any… Show more

“…e rest of the traits displayed lower-to-moderate values of GCV that ranged from 2.7% (days to maturity) to 10.7% (aboveground biomass). is study's result agrees with Ibrahim et al [38], suggesting that there may also be some chance of improving traits with moderate GCV through phenotypic selection. However, the selection is practically impossible in traits with low genotypic coefficient of variation.…”

“…The maximum inter-cluster distance was noted between IV and VI clusters (1588.27) followed by I and VI clusters (1526.21). The hybrids of diversified genotypes were better yielders according to (Kumar et al, 2010;Janaki et al, 2015;Udachappa et al, 2017;Sindhusha and Monisha, 2020). Hence, crossing between the genotypes from IV (PKMCA-07) and VI clusters (PKMCA-37) could be expected better hybrids and to attain maximum heterosis along with desirable segregants.…”

“…In line with the result of this experiment, genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and broad-sense heritability (Hbs) in chili have been widely reported. There was a high GCV and Hbs (68-99%) on the characteristics of fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight and number of fruits per plant in C. annuum under optimum conditions (Jogi et al 2017;Nahak et al 2018;Sindhusha and Rawat 2020). However, the values of GCV and Hbs on cayenne pepper have not been widely reported, especially in conditions of low light-intensity stress.…”
