Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. is cultivated worldwide for its industrial and pharmaceutical applications. The economic value for this crop is due to its herbage, essential oil yield, and citronellal content. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the traits that are important to increase the economic yield and to estimate the variability among the Cymbopogon winterianus germplasm necessary for selection of superior genotypes. In this study, a total of 72 accessions of Cymbopogon winterianus were collected from different parts of Northeast India and planted in the experimental farm of CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, Assam, India. Divergence and association studies among the nine characters were estimated from the 3-yr pooled data. The genotypic coefficient of variation was slightly lower than the phenotypic coefficient of variation for all the traits studied. High genetic advance with high heritability (H 2 BS) estimates were observed in tillers per bush, herbage yield, citronellal, and essential oil content. Path coefficient analysis also supported that the leaves per bush, tillers per bush, leaf breadth, and length of basal sheath were the major contributing characters for the herbage yield. Tillers per bush, leaves per bush, and herbage yield were the direct and indirect factors affecting the essential oil content. Divergence study partitioned the germplasm into 15 different clusters in which tillers per bush, leaves per bush, plant height, leaf length, and herbage yield contributed more towards variability. All the parameters studied could be considered as selection criterion to improve economic yield of C. winterianus and in estimating variability necessary for breeding program.

Nature and amount of genetic variability, associations, and path coefficients were studied in the six traits of 45 genotypes of red sorrel. All the traits showed high heritability except medium for branches/plant (73.94), calyx yield (67.54 %), and low for seed yield (i.e., 41.85%), the highest being for days to flowers 50% (98.12 %) and lowest for seed yield/plot (41.85%). Seed yield/plot was significantly and positively correlated with plant height but negatively correlated with days to flower 50%. Fresh calyx yield is positively correlated with days to flower 50% followed by plant height, and branches/plant exhibited same trends at both genotypic and phenotypic level. However, only plant height and fresh calyx yield made the highest amount of direct and indirect contribution to seed yield/plot. Therefore, plant height and β-carotene serve as better selection criteria to improve red sorrel crop.

Variability of the essential oil composition of cultivated populations of Salvia lavandulifolia Vahl

Spanish sage or lavender sage (Salvia lavandulifolia Vahl) is an aromatic plant with a high economic potential in agriculture because of its rusticity and low chemical inputs. However, the presence of numerous chemotypes hinders the supply of homogeneous crops to the industry and makes the selection and the standardising of the plant material necessary. With this aim, our group achieved an extensive population survey of this species across the Iberian Peninsula to investigate the variability of this species and started a selection program based in multienvironment trials. Thus, 12 wild populations of S. lavandulifolia have been grown in two different localities and their dry biomass production, yield, and composition of essential oil have been monitored during 2 yr of cultivation to evaluate the effect of the genotype × environment interaction on these traits. Each population presented a clearly differentiated composition of the essential oil, although camphor (15.3% average), 1,8‐cineole (15.0%), α‐pinene (11.3%), β‐pinene (8.5%), and limonene (7.5%) were the main compounds. Other compounds like p‐cymene, γ‐terpinene, bornyl acetate, spathulenol, or viridiflorol were only present in some samples. The yield of essential oil ranged from 0.9 to 2.3 g per 100 g dry biomass, and the dry biomass from 76 to 322 g plant−1. Despite the high variability of these traits, we inferred that the essential oil composition in S. lavandulifolia is chiefly determined by genetics which suggests that individual plants (clones) with a favorable composition for a specific application could be selected and bred with a homogeneous quality over time.
