“…GENESYS software (Corbin & Wilkie, 1988) was used for calculations of allelic frequencies, observed heterozygosities and expected heterozygosities (with corrections for sample size; Nei, 1978), F IS for each polymorphic locus, and F ST values; calculation of F-statistics was based on Wright (1978).…”

“…1. pugetensis along the north coast of California. The region of change from nuttalli songs to pugetensis songs lies north of the zone of intergradation in morphological, physiological, and allozyme characters (Banks 1964;Mewaldt et al 1968;Corbin 1981;Corbin and Wilkie 1988). The initial contact between nuttalli and pugetensis may date from the Late Pleistocene (Baker et al 1984).…”

“…However, he does not suggest why genetic introgression northward from the proposed contact point has not occurred, although the differences in migratory behavior of the two subspecies may be important. Furthermore, Corbin and Wilkie (1988) have shown that gene flow is high among all the coastal populations, with up to seven migrants per generation between populations having the greatest song dialect differences.…”

“…The subspecies to the south (Zonotrichia leucophrys nuttalli) is comprised primarily of non-migratory birds whereas the subspecies to the north (Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis) tends to be migratory (Blanchard, 1941). There are clinal shifts in bill length, toe length and tarsus length between the two subspecies (Banks, 1964), which are thought to have diverged in Pleistocene glacial refugia, although phenotypic intermediates abound and no allozymic differences have been detected (Corbin, 1981;Corbin and Wilkie, 1988). We chose 10 individuals from each of the two subspecies from populations located away from the transition zone.…”
