Genetic Relationships and Diversity of Common Buckwheat Accessions in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract: Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) has a long history of cultivation in the large, mountainous regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H). Its commercial production is mainly based on the regionally bred variety ‘Darja’, but numerous landraces are also being grown on a smaller scale. As part of the SEEDNet (Southeast European Network on Plant Genetic Resources) project, these landraces have been collected and stored at the Gene bank of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences in Sarajevo (FAF… Show more

“…The absence of such clustering suggests that strong natural selection has occurred continuously, resulting in continuous diversity. Consistent with previous studies using SSR markers in common [ 68 , 69 ] and Tartary buckwheat [ 27 , 29 ], it is hypothesised that the weak genetic differentiation is the result of extensive local and international seed exchange and/or recent extensive cultivation and selection.…”

“…For the examination of plant genetic diversity, the creation of genetic maps, gene mapping, and cloning are essential due to their locus specificity and co-dominant inheritance, facilitating precise identification and manipulation of target genes [108,109]. Diverse crop varieties enhance farmers' productivity and sustainability by adapting to changing environmental conditions, as seen in higher yielding common buckwheat varieties with determinate growth habits [110].…”
