Genetic relationship between Echinochloa crus‐galli and Echinochloa oryzicola accessions inferred from internal transcribed spacer and chloroplast DNA sequences

Abstract: Barnyardgrass, hexaploid Echinochloa crus-galli, is considered to arise from the hybridization between tetraploid Echinochloa oryzicola and an unknown diploid species. The genetic relationship between E. crus-galli and E. oryzicola was examined to investigate the position of E. oryzicola in the evolutionary process of E. crus-galli, based on the nuclear DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast cpDNA trnT-L, trnL intron, and trnL-F regions. New World E. crus-galli was clearly separated from Eura… Show more

“…Thus, we can conclude that E. oryzicola is a paternal tetraploid donor of allohexaploid E. crus‐galli because the maternal lineage of E. oryzicola is clearly distant to that of E. crus‐galli , based on cpDNA analysis (Yamaguchi et al. 2005; Aoki & Yamaguchi 2008). The Ccr copy of the E. crus‐galli group is considered to be maternal.…”

“…Despite this impact, there is little genetic information about its evolutionary history, although recent studies have better resolved phylogenetic relationships within Echinochloa. Once thought to be conspecific with E. oryzicola, E. crus-galli (a separate hexaploid weed species) is now thought to have arisen through the hybridization of E. oryzicola (tetraploid) and an unknown diploid species (Aoki and Yamaguchi, 2008). E. crus-galli is also a successful weed of several crops but functions as a generalist, whereas E. oryzicola has adapted to mimic rice in morphology and phenology.…”

“…oryzicola and E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch . Although some of these taxa can be conventionally identified on the basis of their spikelet morphological traits and ecological habits, a significant amount of skill is required for their accurate identification, as the morphological features of the spikelet frequently overlap within and between species/taxa …”
