Genetic Predisposition to Self‐Curing Infection with the ProtozoanLeishmania chagasi:A Genomewide Scan

Abstract: The protozoan Leishmania chagasi can cause disseminated, fatal visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or asymptomatic infection in humans. We hypothesized that host genetic factors contribute to this variable response to infection. A family study was performed in neighborhoods of endemicity for L. chagasi near Natal in northeastern Brazil. Study subjects were assessed for the presence of VL or asymptomatic infection, which was defined by a positive delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) skin test response to Leishmania anti… Show more

“…However, other studies have shown differences in the level of MBL between genders in those infected with VL. After puberty, teenagers and adult males are among the most affected by VL owing to hormonal fluctuations that may influence susceptibility to the disease (Jeronimo et al, 2007;Nylén et al, 2007).…”

“…Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar, is caused by the protozoa of the Leishmania donovani complex 3 . Although the risk factors for this disease are not fully understood, it is known that genetic factors, malnutrition and the presence of infected animals in the environment are major contributors to the high maintenance rate of this disease [4][5][6] .…”

“…Although the factors that lead to the development of the disease are still unclear, the complex interactions between the parasite, the immune response and the nutritional status may infl uence the host's response to Leishmania infection 4,[13][14][15][16] .…”

“…An important factor is the diversity of the species that cause disease, which includes clonal differences within the same species that lead to clinical variants (1)(2)(3). Another determinant is the absolute parasite numbers that infect the host, which can influence the infection outcome in combination with the immunological and genetic characteristics of the host (4,5).…”
