Genetic Parameters of Serum Total Protein Concentration Measured with a Brix Refractometer in Holstein Newborn Calves and Fresh Cows

Abstract: The objective was to estimate the genetic parameters of serum total protein concentration in newborn calves (calfSTP) and post parturient dairy cows (cowSTP). The study included 1,013 calves and 989 cows from 10 dairy farms. Calf blood samples were collected 24–48 h after parturition while cow blood and colostrum samples were collected in the first 24 h after calving. Blood serum total protein and colostrum total solids content were determined using a Brix refractometer. Chemical analysis of colostrum was perf… Show more

“…These devices have widely been used in veterinary medical diagnostics for assessing failure in passive transfer (FPT) through determining IgGs in sows [5], dogs [6] and cattle calves [7, 8]. Similarly, they have also been used for determining serum total proteins (TP) in various species with varying sensitivity and specificity as compared to other gold-standard techniques [9-11]. However, to the best of knowledge, the diagnostic efficacy of hand-held digital refractometers for determining TP in indigenous sheep of Pakistan has not yet been unearthed.…”
