Genetic parameters from a clonally replicated test of black spruce (Piceamariana)

Abstract: A clonally replicated field test of full-sib black spruce (Piceamariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) progeny was established at four locations in Nova Scotia. Estimated variance components for 5-year height growth and survival were interpreted according to an additive–dominance–epistasis genetic model and used to derive estimates of gain from various selection and deployment strategies. Five years after striking, 64% of the total genetic variance for height growth was due to additive variance. Virtually all of the remainin… Show more

“…We estimated tall-tree incremental biomass based on tree ring widths measured using DendroScan (Varem-Sanders and Campbell, 1996). The incremental biomass of the short trees was estimated by regressing leader length with height following Macdonald and Lieffers (1990) and Mullin et al (1992). The summation of tall-and short-tree biomass increments for a year represented the incremental biomass of the tree stand for above-ground parts of trees for that year.…”

“…Standard errors of the estimates of heritabilities, genotypic and phenotypic correlations were calculated using a standard Taylor series approximation implemented in the ASReml program (Falconer and Mackay 1996). Predicted gain from genetic selection was calculated according to Mullin et al (1992) as…”

“…Total biomass was determined by weighting ground layer by the proportion of hummocks and hollows at each site (control = 56 % hummocks; drained = 52 % hummocks). Mullin et al (1992) and Macdonald and Lieffers (1990). Summation of biomass increments of tall and short trees for a year represented incremental biomass of tree stand for aboveground parts of the trees (IC biom_ag ) for that year at either site.…”
